Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a visit to Uttarakhand today, inaugurated Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Research Institute in Haridwar too. He visited the Kedarnath temple earlier in the day, to offer his prayers. The prime minister was the first to visit the temple since it was opened today for the season. He is expected to reach the holy city at 12 noon today for the inauguration of the Patanjali Research Institute at Patanjali Yogpeeth. “I will be inaugurating the Patanjali Research Institute at Patanjali Yogpeeth, Haridwar tomorrow, 12 noon onwards. @yogrishiramdev,” he had tweeted on Tuesday.
As per the website of Patanjali, patanjaliresearch.com, the institute which is a part of the Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar, was founded in August 2010. The institute like its parent body Patanjali Yogpeeth has been named after sage Patanjali, who was the first to compile several writings on Yoga, which are relevant even today in the day to day life of every person.
While explaining about the aim of the institute in its website, the foundation in its website said that one of its main tasks is to make research on indigenous systems of medicine, especially yoga and Ayurveda. It said their effects are studied in the institute using scientific methods, so as to these systems of medicine in order to promote health. The foundation’s website also said that while it carries out actual scientific studies in laboratories, the aim is also to review ancient text for reading.
With its research on ayurvedic herbs and medicines, Patanjali also aims to get them recognised globally as scientific and authentic medicines, which would not only help people in India, but across the globe to seek benefits of holistic knowledge of Ayurveda, making Ayurvedic medicines gain recognition across the globe much like allopathic medicines are officially recognised today.
The institute aims to conduct research work on Drug Screening, pharmacognosy, drug discovery, pharmacology, chronic disease study, and more. It also aims to study scientific ways for ancient practices various areas of life, like in architecture or farming, to make them better understood in present day society and can be preserved.
Patanjali itself first came into being on January 5, 1995 in Haridwar. Later its various trusts and institutes made major strides in the country and worldwide through propagation of Yoga and Ayurveda.
